Social Innovation projects in Benin Print E-mail

In Benin, together with Friends of Africa: continuing our Social Innovation projects in this poverty-stricken area of Africa.

For more than 10 years Bracco, ADA Onlus (Friends of Africa, non-profit) and Esplorativa have helped support this territory through social innovations. In an area lacking basic infrastructure, we have aimed at improving the quality of life and access to food through the empowerment of women.

In 2015 especially, we strengthened our commitment in Benin. We created a start-up of 100 women who harvest and process cassava. We initiated training courses, the construction of a multi-functional space, and provided technological equipment: these are the cornerstones that form the foundation of the initiative that has created job opportunities, new business activities and a better quality of life just a few steps away from our Fulvio Bracco College. The entire project is therefore in the hands of women, in a country where they are often overlooked key figures in the family and where accessing credit is almost impossible for them.

The real revolution started with the youngest girls attending the Bracco school, born 10 years ago in this territory. The most educated young women manage the financial and communication aspects, training illiterate mothers. It is a multi-stakeholder project focused on nutrition, sustainability, workplace safety, training, and involvement of the local community. It brings local tradition and innovation together, optimizing the entire agri-food chain, and encourages special attention to food in terms of availability, sustainability and methods of use.

This initiative was awarded by the Sodalitas Foundation.
Fulvio Renoldi Bracco, CEO of Bracco Imaging, accepted the award for Bracco at the 13th Sodalitas Social Awards in 2015 – the most prestigious recognition of Corporate Sustainability in Italy. Our company was awarded in the category of Smart Community, Entrepreneurship and Social Inclusion. The initiative was chosen for its multi-stakeholder approach, the social innovation it has brought about within the area and the concrete improvement of the quality of life in one of the poorest areas of Africa.
